Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
